John Lair (1894-1985) was a writer, historian, and radio producer most notably creating the Renfro Valley Barn Dance in 1937 first in Cincinnati and later Renfro Valley in Rockcastle County, Kentucky Lair wrote several books on music and Kentucky history and penned more than 500 songs The Renfro Valley Country Store was an early 1950s nationally broadcast radio program produced by Lair, sponsored by General Foods, and staged in a working store in built especially for that purpose
