(Photo by dailyindependentcom) Kentucky writer Billy C Clark (1928-2004) tells stories of his eastern Kentucky upbringing during the 1930s and 1940s and how he portrays the region's people and culture in his writing He is speaking as the honored guest at the 10th annual O'Tucks banquet (1968) in Hamilton, Ohio At that time he was teaching at the University of Kentucky's Community College in Somerset, Kentucky His notable writings as of then included "A Long Row to Hoe" (1960), "Goodbye Kate" (1964) and "Sourwood Tales" (1968)
"O'Tucks" is a contraction of "Ohioans from Kentucky" The organization was started by Stanley Dezarn in 1959 to be a means for Kentuckians moved to the Hamilton area to preserve and celebrate their native culture in a new setting Dezarn, a teacher and school principal, was a native of Clay County, Kentucky as were many others who had moved to the Ohio community to work for the Champion Paper Company
