Manuel D "Old Joe" Clark (1922-1998) was born in Johnson City (Carter, Sullivan, and Washington counties) Tennessee but relocated to London Kentucky after serving in WWII While playing with his band the Lonesome Pine Boys Clark was hired by John Lair to join the Renfro Valley Barn Dance in Rockcastle County, Kentucky Lair created the character "Old Joe", a cranky old wise cracker, for Clark who played the Character for 50 years The Renfro Valley Barn Dance was a radio program developed by John Lair in 1937 in Cincinnati, Ohio, later moving to Dayton, Ohio before settling in Renfro Valley in Rockcastle County, Kentucky in 1939 Other of Lair's programs originating from the Valley included the Renfro Valley Country Store, the Renfro Valley Gatherin'
