These scratchy home recordings were made by Nora Carpenter (1888-1975) during the late 1940s and early 1950s They document her playing and singing and that of other Magoffin County, Kentucky musicians With Nora they comprised Big Mamma and the Half Mountain Hotshots a string band that had a strong following on Paintsville radio station, WSIP during this time period Nora was in her early 60s when she made these recordings Using audio tape, she recorded her playing and singing again in 1972 about three years before her death
